Festering animosity between the United Auto Workers and Southern senators who torpedoed the auto industry bailout bill erupted into full-fledged name calling Friday as union officials accused the lawmakers of trying to break the union on behalf of foreign automakers.
With America hurting and the global economy on a natural downsizing of sorts, why does the UAW think that it too would not need to rearrange and make some serious concessions to survive? It is evident that that membership and recruitment of the union is waning and globalization has hurt even the most American of companies. So why risk losing all by not leaning up and bargaining for the good of the country as well as the UAW? If the Big 3 do get their bailout, and three months from now, they come back with hat in hand to Congress, you can kiss not only the auto makers goodbye but also the UAW itself will have trouble existing in the future. It will be the UAW that gets the black eye and will be accused of in part causing the failure of the American auto industry.
Who opinion is it that the UAW hasn't made serious and substantial concessions?
Southern states take more from the union than they contribute. The last thing those welfare state senators should do is lecture working Americans; berate them for making more than third-world laborers or the local Walmart greeter.
We bail out airlines that suck.
We bail out banks that suck.
We've already bailed out automakers that suck (Chrysler). Now our capitalist conscience kicks in?
It doesn't seem right to me. Wall Street was bailed out no questions asked, but giving the Big 3 a loan is causing all kinds of protests. Something smells fishy here.
Union officials also accused the senators of retaliating for the UAW's overwhelming support of Democratic candidates in federal races. The union gave $1.9 million to Democrats but only $11,500 to Republicans in the 2008 election cycle.
You get what you pay for.
Or as the Rolling Stones wrote."You Can't Always Get What You Want".
As I understand it, the only sticking point in the last round of negotiations was that the UAW had to give a date certain in 2009 to achieve wage parity with the nonunion automakers, which the UAW refused to do.
Sounds to me like the UAW needs to be beating on themselves for killing the deal, not Republicans.
Let's face it the Republicians have been anti-union, and pro-business for ever. Regan busted the Air-traffic controlers union back in the 80's. If the Unions fail, woe to us all, wages and benifits will fall, it will be like taking a trip back in time to the mid-1800's and early 1900's where hourly wages were small, forced overtime without pay, no benifits at all , and unsafe work environments etc.etc.etc. The Southern Republican Senators should be tried for treason, for voting against the Auto Industry, if they think for one minute that if we allow one or all three U.S. Auto-makers fail it will not adversly affect them or the good people of their respective states--well think again, these Forigen auto-makers are suffering as well, auto-sales are down world-wide, and when the time comes for these companies to shut-down plants and layoff workers where do you think they will start, Japan, Korea---hahahaha, no right their in good ol' Alabama, Kentucky, and Tennesse.
The UAW is correct.
That crazy clown Glenn Beck on FOX News's O'Reilly show yesterday claimed the U.S. is in 1860 all over again. I agree. And imbeciles such as himself are going to be on the losing side. This time Thaddeus Stevens's prescription for the Confederacy should be followed to the letter.

Republicans don't need to break the UAW. UAW are employeed at businesses with broken business models that will not survive in a global economy. The only way the Big 3 will survive is if the taxpayer continually gives them bailout after bailout.
All these politicians are quick to write checks to white collar companies and then scrutinize blue collar companies. Politicians should not be doing either - they should be busting butt to fix the laws that allowed this to happen. And yes, the politicians should also correct their miserable failure called "free trade" which has cost this country millions of jobs. For if a major war ever broke out, we would have to import lead/hormone/insecticide military equipment from China just to fight. And I bet the equipment would be as defective as most of the stuff sitting on American store shelves now. But I guess politicians could care less about having our own manufacturing capabilities.
I feel that the time for unions has passed, yes they were needed in the past. At this point in time I feel that there enough laws and agencies to protect the American workers. 30 dollars an hour seems to be a little high just to bolt on a fender or put a dash in a car etc. We also have the union officials lining there pockets at the employees expense, and don't tell me they aren't. They also lose there high paying jobs if the unions phased out, might have to look for a real job like the rest of us then. Ever wonder why prices keep going up, look at the unions
Those Union guys have fought for that money and some have died. it is not their fault that the deck has been stacked against them due to unfair trade balances and and a banking mess. They would be jsut fine had the banks not hoarded our money. Someone should really take a look and see who has make contributions to the Republican Senators camapaigns.
They are simply some of the lucky ones that has managed to keep their seats. The have made a great move. Block the bailout and get recognition and votes from their narrowminded, selfish, uncaring constituents. While at the same time getting the Federal Government to bail out the car companies. So that when they go under, they share no fault. This is so easy to fugure. When are people going to start to think about what is really going on in the minds of these guys? I do it everyday.
The bailout will not save GM or Chrysler but it will prolong the life for the UAW.
Toyota and Honda are now having problems selling cars and their inventories are now building up near California ports but they have the money to offer low interest loans. Does anyone actually believe GM or Chrysler will turn a profit anytime soon?
Well, honestly I could care less if either company make a profit. I care about the lives it would ruin. if 15 million dollars will keep 100,000 more people in their homes that is enough for me. Sinply because of the colatteral damage lives it would cost if it does not get the bailout.
Has anyone looked really deep into what would happen if 3 to 5 million people were to suddenly become unemployed in the United States? I predict that if car manufacturers are allowed to fail, there will be a revolution. Hospitals would begin to struggle fail as patients without health care become a financial burden. Cities would be forced to layoff Police, Fire, EMS and Sanitation workers. Next would be the Street crews and snow removal and salt distribution which would make our streets less safe during the winter season and cause pot holes in the summer season that tears up our vehicles. Sanitation personnel and Human Services will be cut at a time when there is an increase in homelessness, domestic Violence, divorce rates, child abuse and increases in foreclosures due to high rates of unemployment.
Eventually they would adopt to go to a 4 day work week production which would result in longer lines and despair. The far reaching arm of poverty would cause a spike in the crime rate. Courts and Jail over crowding would lead to early release of prisoners which cannot find a job would be left to on society. Massive numbers of citizens are beginning to drive without auto insurance or license plates. There is already a spike in homelessness and a swelling of welfare and unemployment roles. We will experience an increase in prostitution, teen pregnancy; drop out rates, child abuse and abandonment. Businesses begin to close early and arm themselves for fear of being robbed due to increases in property crimes and corner store murders and holdups.
